Chapter 11 - Being an Adult

d

Instead of calming down, I got more and more agitated. Damn hormones! I really, really needed a release, but I couldn’t play with myself and then go play games with my family. Except for Charles. I’d very much like to play games with him.

That was a dangerous path. I jumped to my feet, determined to run to the bathroom and have a thoroughly “relaxing” shower. I could get myself off fast and be squeaky clean for the wholesome portion of the evening. I opened my still unpacked suitcase on the bed and was rummaging for a change of clothes when someone knocked on the door.

“Are you asleep?” Blake shouted from the hallway.

“I wouldn’t be anymore, would I, monkey?” I said opening the door. “Why aren’t you losing at charades right now?”

He ignored my dig at his inability to mime. “Dad needs to get in touch with someone and our laptops are low on power. How’s yours?”

The idea of lending Charles my laptop didn’t bother me, but having him in my bedroom made me antsy. I looked behind Blake, but his dad wasn’t in sight.

“Probably fine,” I said, relieved that I wouldn’t have to put up with the source of my current restlessness in the place where I was supposed to be able to rest. “Let me check.”

“You’re the best,” Blake said. He pointed to the open door of the study room. “We’re over there.”

Regretfully, I gave up on having a shower. I put on a pair of jeans and a long T-shirt before getting my laptop out of the bag. I usually kept it charged up, but I had forgotten about that thanks to Hurricane Charles. Plugging it in for a few minutes wasn’t going to drain the generator. I got the charger out of the bag, too, wrapped the cord around it tightly and shoved it in my back pocket checking that the T-shirt covered it.

Before leaving the room, I booted up the laptop and created a new user. I doubted Charles would snoop around, but he needed to log in to his email and maybe other accounts. Once he finished, I’d delete his user. It would be much cleaner this way.

A few minutes later when I walked into the study room, I found Charles sitting at Blake’s desk. Blake was in his gaming chair, with his back to the huge screen to which his consoles connected.

“It’s at 70%,” I lied, placing the laptop in front of Charles.

I turned my phone into a hotspot. The laptop connected to it immediately as it always did. With all the work I did on the run, my phone and my laptop were best friends.

“Thanks,” Charles said. “It’s only going to take me a few minutes.”

“Take your time.” I turned to Blake. “Hey, monkey, can you bring me a piece of cake?”

“Now?”

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I said, looking at the unplugged consoles and the black screen. “Am I disturbing you from a championship game online?”

He made a face but got up.
